Evacuation Criteria

Means of Evacuation

An Operator-on-Call list is maintained for vehicles owned or leased by the University; this list is maintained by the University Police Department (UCPD). Additional qualified drivers are available at the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) by contacting the UCMC Sergeant at 773-702-6262.

Available Means of Transport

  1. University van service equipment controlled by UCPD
    • 2 vans, seats 12 each
  2. UCMC van service equipment controlled by UCMC Security
    • 2 buses, seats 14 each
    • 1 bus, seats 29
    • 3 vans, seats 7 each
    • 2 vans, seats 29 each
    • 1 bus, seats 20

Additional buses with lifts can be obtained by calling the Director of Transportation and Parking at 773-612-4239. Again, the availability of these buses may be influenced by time of day, the year, and/or the availability of qualified operators.

Evacuation Routes

If the entire campus needs to be evacuated, all vehicular traffic is to use any of the north/south arteries that dissect campus and head to the major east/west arteries: the Midway Plaisance or 55th Street. Once at the Midway Plaisance or 55th Street, UCPD will direct traffic accordingly. If need be, opposing lanes of traffic will be rerouted to facilitate the safe and timely evacuation of campus. Note: Cottage Grove and Stony Island Avenues would be considered major north/south routes into or out of the city.
